How to Calculate Your Life Path Number (and What 11, 22 and 33 Mean)

Your life path number is the main number in numerology, worked out from your date of birth alone. It takes two minutes with a pen. Here is the method most numerologists use (the Pythagorean one), a worked example, and the meanings.

The method

  1. Reduce the month to a single digit (or to 11 or 22, see below). November is 11 and stays 11.
  2. Reduce the day the same way. The 29th is 2 + 9 = 11, which stays 11.
  3. Reduce the year: 1990 is 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1.
  4. Add the three results and reduce again, keeping 11, 22 and 33 if they appear.

Worked example

4 July 1990. Month 7. Day 4. Year 1990 → 19 → 10 → 1. Then 7 + 4 + 1 = 12 → 1 + 2 = 3. Life path 3.

29 April 1975. Month 4. Day 29 → 11 (kept). Year 1975 → 22 (kept). Then 4 + 11 + 22 = 37 → 3 + 7 = 1. Life path 1. Notice the master numbers are kept in the parts but the final sum still reduces unless it is 11, 22 or 33 itself.

Why reduce the parts separately?

Because it preserves master numbers that would be lost if you added every digit in one line. 2 February 1960 gives 2 + 2 + (1 + 9 + 6 + 0 = 16 → 7) = 11, a master number; added digit by digit it would collapse to 2.

What the numbers mean, briefly

  • 1 the beginner: independence, courage, going first.
  • 2 the peacemaker: partnership, tact, balance.
  • 3 the voice: expression, joy, making things.
  • 4 the builder: foundations, reliability, craft.
  • 5 the traveller: freedom, change, appetite for life.
  • 6 the keeper: care, home, responsibility for others.
  • 7 the seeker: understanding, solitude, depth.
  • 8 the steward: power, money, handling responsibility well.
  • 9 the old soul: compassion, breadth, letting go.
  • 11 the lantern: insight and inspiration, with sensitive nerves (also lives as a 2).
  • 22 the architect: building at scale (also lives as a 4).
  • 33 the teacher: care raised to a calling (also lives as a 6). Rare.

The other numbers in a reading

The life path is from the birthday. The name gives three more: expression (all the letters), soul urge (vowels) and personality (consonants).
